An Overview of NCIST

North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) is accountable to the State Administration of Work Safety. Based on the work of its predecessor, Beijing Coal Management Institute (set up by the former Ministry of Coal Industry in 1984), it was reorganized as North China Mining College in 1993. In 1997 the College was assessed and evaluated by the former State Education Commission as one of the 27 demonstrative and key construction engineering colleges in China. By the year of 2002, another milestone was reached in the development of the college—an upgrading to an undergraduate institute, which was renamed as North China Institute of Science and Technology. In the year of 2011, NCIST was qualified to admit postgraduate students in the field of engineering (Safety Engineering).

NCIST covers a total area of 800 mu, and has a further building area of 427,000 ㎡ . The facilities and equipment for teaching and research are currently valued at 160,000,000 yuan. NCIST has 3 key laboratories of the provincial and ministerial level and it owns a demonstration center of experimental teaching in Hebei province. Modern teaching technology is so widely applied in NCIST that it serves as a network base for the China Education and Research Network (CERNET).

The NCIST library has a large collection of 1,080,000 books, and over 1,249 newspapers and periodicals (in both Chinese and other languages). Additionally, it has 1,350,000 digital books, together with 23 databases, thus has established a more complete literature supporting system.

Currently, NCIST has an excellent faculty team comprised of over 1,000 members in total, including 859 full-time teachers. Of all the professional teachers, about 80% hold master or doctoral degrees and nearly 46% are professors or associate professors. Furthermore, NCIST also has 2 academician (external) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 12 state-level senior experts specialized in various fields.

NCIST offers 41 undergraduate programs, covering eight disciplinary fields: engineering, science, liberal arts, law, economics, management , education and arts, etc . Safety Technology and Engineering and Mining Engineering are provincial key disciplines; Safety Engineering, Mining Engineering and Automation are three undergraduate specialties which are listed by the Ministry of Education as special construction programs for their unique characteristics.

The total enrollment of full-time students is over 16,000 at NCIST . Of all the undergraduates, over 80% get immediate employment and about 15% receive postgraduate admission, especially for Safety Engineering major the rate is currently near 30%.

Currently, NCIST has 11 research centers distributed in the following fields, including gas prevention and control, water damage prevention and control, information and control technology and safety and social development, etc; 5 key laboratories of the provincial and ministerial level, including mine disaster prevention and control,  safety ergonomics ,  green mining and ecological   restoration ; 2 platforms supported by safety technology--industrial explosion disaster prevention research center and North China safety science. NCIST is entitled first grade work safety measurement and test qualification. In the past five years, NCIST has signed more than 540 research contracts of various kinds with the fund amounting to 150 million yuan, of which covering 60 national and provincial longitudinal projects valued more than 30 million yuan and 47 provincial and above level technology awards, which provides powerful support for shaping the characteristics of NCIST as being professional in safety technology.

The National Safety Training Center of Coal Mine (founded in 1985 at this institute) is an important training base for the State Administration of Work Safety. It provides the following training services on a regular basis, including mine safety supervision, mine rescue, emergency management and mine disaster prevention & control, etc. About 5,000 trainees accept training here annually.

NCIST maintains a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with the UNDP and the International Labor Organization; meanwhile, joint education programs have been started with higher learning institutions and research institutes from America, UK and Canada to cultivate professionals. Presently, more than 20 long-term foreign experts and teachers are employed by the institute. Moreover, the current enrollment of international students is 79.

Guided by the school motto “Enhancing Self Motivation and Cultivation, Safeguarding Production and the Nation”, the school has fostered and encouraged its spirit of “United, Industrious, Pragmatic and Innovative”. The school has also developed a pragmatic teaching style which aims to uphold a standard of excellence by “Pursuing Rigorous Scholarship, Imparting Knowledge and Educating People”. The school has created a sound academic atmosphere enabling all its teachers and students to enjoy “Learning, Thinking, Practicing and Creating”.

NCIST is working hard towards its goal of becoming a modern multi-disciplinary university characterized by professionalism in safety technology and a united disciplinary structure in engineering, science, management, economics, social science, humanities and law. It is making great efforts to build up a top-ranking training center training senior professionals and solving core technological problems of work safety.
